The word translated as “God” is the word ‘ĕlôhı̂ym”” which is a plural form.

  • The Father
  • The Son
  • The Holy Spirit

Is Christianity a form of Polytheism? Is there not one supreme Being that we as Christians worship?

Let us first look at the word “worship” – Merriam-Webster dictionary:

  • to honor or show reverence for as a divine being or supernatural power
  • to regard with great or extravagant respect, honor, or devotion

There is absolutely no doubt that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are honorable, divine beings and therefore we regard Them with extravagant respect, honor and we give Them our full devotion. So yes, according to this definition, we most definitely worship Them with all that we are and have.

The One in charge is the God the Father: Jesus Himself said: “But of that day (when Jesus returns again) and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father”.

The Father allowed His Son Jesus to be tortured and murdered so that Jesus could carry the guilt of us humans “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

The Holy Spirit is the One who came to be with us, teach us more about the Father, lead us, guide us, give us the power to do the work that the Father requires from us “And, behold (Jesus said), I send the promise (the Holy Spirit) of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Why do we say that They are “One”?

When a man takes his loved one as his bride, they are supposed to “become one”. This was specifically designed this way so that we could get a glimpse of the One we worship.

But we are missing understanding what “One” means.

  • We miss it when we say that husband and wife is a 50 – 50 affair. It is not. It is a 100 – 100 affair.
  • We miss it when we expect the other person to do “their share” in the relationship

When Jesus came to pay for our sins by dying on the cross, when He came to get beaten so that through His stripes we could be healed, we did not perform our part of the contract. We were supposed to love God and to love each other. Although we did not do our part, He did His part.

At this point it is important to understand the contracts that were made by God with man – see Testaments.

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one in that they complement each other, if you see one, you see the other. They have no disagreements although They are totally separate Beings. They are One as the husband and wife should have been one.

Now let us have a look at the prayer of Jesus:

John 17

Joh 17:9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
Joh 17:10  And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
Joh 17:11  And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

and

Joh 17:20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Joh 17:21  That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

If Christians can only learn to walk in love, we will see what it means to be “one”. God (‘elohiym) is not a Judge waiting for us to do something wrong. The Father allowed His Son to go through hell (literally) for us while we were Their enemies and Jesus agreed. Where have you ever seen such love – not on this planet, that is for sure.
